National Examination for Marriage and Family Therapy

The Marriage and Family Therapy National Examination is offered during a 4-week window of time three times a year. The next and last administration period for 2006 will take place during September 11, 2006 - October 7, 2006. Applications will be accepted by the Professional Examination Service (PES) up until 2 weeks before the opening of the examination window.

The state board where the candidate wishes to be licensed must review and approve the candidate for eligibility. In Louisiana you must be registered as a MFT Intern to be eligible to take the test. You may take the exam during any window of time after being approved as an MFT Intern. The examination is administered through Thomson Prometric Test Centers. There currently are five locations in Louisiana, but candidates may take the examination at any Center. See www.prometric.com for more information. The MFT exam is listed under Association of Marriage and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards.

The LPC Board will give each approved candidate an application for the exam. Approved candidates send their applications and payment directly to PES when they are ready to take the exam. PES will notify the candidates of the exam procedures

PES scores the examinations and reports the scores and relevant normative data to the administering board. The LPC Board will receive a group score report 20 business days after the close of the testing window. Each state board sets the standard for passing in its respective state and reports the results to the candidates.

The total fee for the MFT exam is $295.00. The candidates submit $220.00 to Professional Examination Service (PES) with the application when registering and $75.00 to the Thomson Prometric Test Center where they plan to take the exam when scheduling the date and time.

For more detailed information, see the websites for the Association of Marriage and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards (AMFTRB) at www.amftrb.org, the Professional Examination Service (PES) at www.proexam.org, and Thompson Prometric at www.prometric.com

LAMFT/LMFT Liaison Report by Lynn Pearlmutter, Ph.D.,LMFT, LCSW

The Annual post Mardi Gras LAMFT conference again was held at the Sheraton Convention Center in Baton Rouge. In the opinion of this consumer, the bar continues to be raised. The quality of the featured presentations and breakout sessions were all top notch. The registration and ceu process was smooth. If you do not attend this annual event, you should add it to your calendar. I consider it on par with the best of the national meetings I attend.

An added feature this year, was the toast/roast of Tim Dwyer, immediate past president of

LAMFT. In August, Tim will become the McCormick Tribune Endowed Chair in Marriage and Family Therapy, MFT program director, and senior staff member at the Family Institute at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. As he leaves our state we want to thank him for the many contributions he has made to the growth of the marriage and family therapy profession in Louisiana and wish him continued success as he emerges as a national leader in the field. We know that Louisiana will continue to be dear to his heart and we hope to count on seeing him for Jazz Fest every year. Meanwhile, we bid a fond but sad farewell to Tim who will leave New Orleans in early August.
