The following guidelines are designed to help you with the application process. A guideline that applies to a specific training area will be prefaced by a letter corresponding to the training area in question. For example, consulting the Training Area list below you will see that a comment prefaced by " A " will pertain to "statistics", an item prefaced by "B" will pertain to "sampling theory", etc.

    A. Statistics
    B. Sampling theory
    C. Test construction
    D. Test and measurements
    E. Individual differences
    F. Practicum with appraisal instruments
    G. Supervised practice with appraisal instruments

1. The applicant must show evidence of graduate course work in training areas A., B, C, D and E. Therefore, the Board must have on file: An official transcript issued directly to the Board from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning indicating graduate- level course work in these training areas.
The applicant has the option of also using graduate-level coursework to meet training
 requirements for areas F and G .

2. Transcript only evidence of training must indicate a clear relationship between the training area in question and the course listing on the transcript. For example, for the training area " A. Statistics" the course listing ADV STATS would be acceptable because it clearly relates to statistics. On the other hand, the course listing QUANTITATIVE :METHODS would not be acceptable without further documentation because it is not clear from the listing alone that statistics was covered in this course.
Similarly, for the training area "F. Practicum with appraisal instruments'. the course listing TESTING PRACTICUM would show a clear relationship to the training area. On the other hand, the course listing PRACTICUM would not be acceptable without further documentation because it is not clear from the listing alone that appraisal instruments were administered by the applicant during this course. If transcript only evidence does not establish a clear relationship to a training area, the applicant must offer additional documentation" such as catalogue descriptions or a letter.

3. Catalogue descriptions must present a clear relationship between the description and the training area in question. For example, if the course QUANTITATIVE :METHODS is being offered in satisfaction of the " A statistics" training area requirement the catalogue description " A survey of quantitative research techniques including research methods, statistics and experimental design" would be acceptable because it shows a clear relationship between the catalogue description and the training area. However, the catalogue description "Principles and procedures in the quantitative analysis of classroom problems" would not be acceptable because it is not clear from the catalogue description alone that statistics is covered in the course. Applicants who have not provided satisfactory evidence of training through transcript and catalogue evidence must offer additional documentation such as a letter from a creditable source.

4. Catalogue evidence must include photocopies of the relevant course descriptions and of the title page of the catalogue.

5. A letter offered as evidence of training must meet the following requirements:
a. Issued by a credible source (faculty member, supervisor) qualified to provide such evidence.
b. Indicates what was done, where it was done and when.
c. Through the letter or other documentation it should be evident that the applicant participated in and successfully completed the activity described in the letter.
                                                                                                                                                             d. A clear relationship between the statements in the letter and a specific training area or areas should be evident.

 6. Letter evidence of "F. Practicum with appraisal instruments" must meet the requirements in 5. above and also indicate: A learning experience during which an individual demonstrates to the satisfaction of an evaluator qualified to make such a judgment the ability to competently and ethically administer, score, and interpret a formal appraisal instrument.

7. Letter evidence of "G. Supervised practice with appraisal instruments" must meet the requirements of5. above and also indicate: A learning experience during which an individual demonstrates to the satisfaction of an evaluator qualified to make such a judgment the ability to competently and ethically utilize formal appraisal instruments in the counseling process.

8. The applicant is encouraged to provide any information which will help the Board to review his/her application, however the Board is not able to accept unsupported claims by the applicant in lieu of documentation. For example, claims such as "I covered statistics in ASSESSMENT SYMPOSIUM, ED 622", or "I successfully administered over 50 supervised Wechsler tests in my school psychology internship" can not be accepted at face value without credible independent supporting documentation.

 9. Experience with administering the appraisal privileging rule has shown that some specific types of courses meet training area content requirements even though the course titles may not immediately suggest such a match. For example, it has been determined that, in general, courses with titles incorporating the term "research" meet the content requirements for the training areas A Statistics and B. Sampling Theory.
The term "in general" is used here to indicate that the Board reserves the right to draw on all of the information at its disposal in reviewing each course. For example, a "research" course offered though an education, counseling or psychology department might be acceptable, while one offered through a paralegal studies or history department would not. In all cases of doubt, the applicant has the option of offering additional documentation.

9.1 Training areas A. Statistics and B. Sampling theory may be satisfied by a course titled
                   "Research" .
9.2 Training areas B. Sampling theory, C. Test construction and D. Test and
measurements may be satisfied by a course titled "Psychometrics" or "Test and
                   Measurements" .
9.3 Training areas B. Sampling theory, C. Test construction, D. Test and measurements
and E. Individual differences may be satisfied by a course titled " Assessment",
"Appraisal" or "Analysis of the Individual".
9.4 Training area E. Individual differences may be satisfied by a course titled
"Personality" or "Abnormal Psychology". In addition, E. may be satisfied by a
course in cross-cultural counseling or by a course which teaches the classification of
individuals using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.
